
Geneticists from several Countries in Asia namely -- Hong Kong (China), Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand - have joined forces and the Asia Pacific Society for Human Genetics (APSHG) was founded. The group started with geneticists from 7 countries; all with a vision of increasing awareness on the importance of genetics in improving health care and bringing new technology that is at par with that of the Western world, according to Dr. Carmencita Padilla, president of APSHG.
The APSHG board members met in Manila last February 23, 2009 to plan regional activities for 2009 - 2010. Among the forthcoming 2010 activities are the Regional Meeting of the International Society for Neonatal Screening in Indonesia and the 9th Asia Pacific Conference on Human Genetics in Hong Kong. Regional and country workshops are being scheduled for the different areas in genetics. The APSHG board members also participated as speakers at the 10th Anniversary of the Institute of Human Genetics where they delivred papers on new developments in genetics as well as insights about genetics in their respective countries.
APSHG Board Members present were Dr. Carmencita Padilla from the Philippines (President), Dr. Pornswan Wasant from Thailand (Immediate Past President), Dr. Stephen Lam from Hongkong (President-elect), Dr. Meow Keow Thong from Malaysia (Secretary), Dr. Eva Cutiongco-de la Paz from the Philippines (Assistant Secretary), Dr. Lai Poh San from Singapore and Dr. Sangkot Marzuki from Indonesia.
